ALBUM REVIEWS 2010: CRYSTAL CASTLES II - CRYSTAL CASTLES
Alice Glass - a runaway, supported by a nearby punk community.Ethan Kath - a mysterious man whose armaments consist of KORGs and 8-bit samples.
It is at this point that the two meet and accidentally record a few vocal tracks.
Crystal Castles is born.
Their work has been described in the past as “an assault of the ears”, “absolutely insane” and “what the fuck?”
I thoroughly enjoyed their first album and associated demos, remixes and mashups.
Their second self-titled album opens with a wild stir of noise - typical CC approach - but immediately the mastering and fuller stereo effect takes a hold. While it seems like little, it drags this album slowly away from their first.
CCII is certainly different. Twelve out of fourteen tracks are consistent, laid-back and more subdued than CC’s previous work. In all twelve, Alice’s vocals are gentler than usual, sometimes desperate, always achy. The opening track, ‘Fainting Hearts’, alludes to CC’s noise-band dimension, and ‘Doe Deer’ is an absolute onslaught of the ears. As if bottling up all her hidden emotion from the rest of the album, Alice lets go on ‘Doe Deer’, stirring up every corner of the auditory system she can reach.
Ethan’s loop synthesis and chord exploration widens massively throughout this album. What appeared to be a limited range of resources in their first album is now a wide, mature and adapted array of microKORG-esque sounds. Their registered 8-bit is heard only in places, subtly, masked with effects. Electric kit hi-hats used extensively in the first album is used sparely in II.
Overall, CCII is a brave new step, and a clever one. Most of the tracks, while all completely different, merge into each other in a far more mature, careful manner. Long-time CC fans may find parts of this album disappointing. CC’s first album was reported to correspond perfectly with recreational drug use, particularly of LSD, for a more edgy high, a more thrilling trip, a more endurable crash. CCII is metaphorical as opposed to demented, for a gentler, more calming listening experience - save ‘Doe Deer’ of course.

    zero : thirty-nine : fifty-three: Celestica - Crystal Castles

    As we fall into sequence
    and we’re eating our young
remain silent and still for modesty

When the splints have been broken
and they can’t help you now
do you pray with your eyes closed naturally

    Follow me to nowhere
    Woven with the utmost care

If I’m lost please don’t find me
    if I drown let me…
